Second Summer Update 2013

Since my last update and along with training there have been involved with numerous events. However, before I tell you about them, I’ll talk about my training. As I mentioned in my previous update, with Push Championships being moved up earlier my workouts had to be moved up as well, which is why I’m entering my twelfth week of training. Training has been going great, and I’ve noticed that my hamstrings have grown a little bit more this year.  I know some of you are curious to how that happened and the answer is simple….I WORK OUT! Lol Seriously though I do. I work out hard; I do my best to improve in every phase of my training from week to week.

During the week I lift Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and run Tuesday (Topless Tuesday), Thursday (Throw-up Thursday) and Saturday (Suck It UP Saturday) having Friday and Sunday off. I also work as a campus tour guide Monday-Saturday. Overall training is going great out here in Colorado Springs; we have a solid group of Bobsled and Skeleton athlete’s out here training. The sprints I do range in distance from 20-80 meters in length using bungee cords or parachutes for resistive and assistive sprints; along. With prints from 15-80 meters without any apparatuses.  I do plyometric jumps onto boxes, over boxes, off boxes, over hurdles and up stadium stairs.  As you can imagine all these of these sprints, lifts and exercises I do takes a toll on your body, so I take a down week every four weeks or so. Taking a down week allows my body to recover from the physical strains associated with several straight weeks of hard lifting and sprinting.  During a down week of lifting I reduce my normal lifts anywhere from 40%-50%. Although the amount of weight I’m using reduces my effort does not. During my down week the intensity and volume of my sprint workout remains the same! Please copy and paste the following links in you web-browser to view video clips of my training. Pictures of my training will be posted on my web-site by Friday!

Up Next!

As of this week I am seven weeks away from the USA Bobsled 2013 Push Championships that will be held in Calgary, Canada!!! This is the event that ranks me and all of the other bobsled brakeman as we head into the season. Push Championships helps to pair me with one of the top drivers on World Cup and is the first major event of the year that will propel me closer to my goal of becoming a 2014 Olympian. Prior to Push Championships and in addition to my current training regimen I’m planning on taking several self-funded trips,  to Lake Placid, Ny, Park City, UT, and Calgary, Canada to train on their push tracks before Push Champs. After Push Champs I will head to Lake Placid to continue my push training with the team mates I will race with for National Team Trials. Team trials will be held in Lake Placid and Park City, Utah which are both self-funded trips!!! After team trials in October we will begin World Cup racing. Throughout the year our results on World Cup will determine who is named to the Olympic Team in January 2014!!

June 12th-23rd Lake Placid, NY               Push Training
June 24th-June 27th Park City, UT           Push Training
July 21st-27th Calgary, Canada                 Push Training
July 28th-AUG 4th Calgary, Canada         Combine Testing and Push Championships
October (TBA)                                           National Team Trials
November 18th                                          World Cup Races Begin in Lake Placid
January 2014                                              Bobsled Olympic Team Named

It’s Olympic year and I’m ready to get this season going! It’s going to be a great season for me and #Team_USA_Bobsled_Super_Force!!!

Stories

Warrior Games

In May the OTC hosted the opening ceremonies for the Annual Warrior Games! The Warrior Games are for battle injured service members (male and female) who compete in Paralympic sporting events http://www.teamusa.org/warriorgames/ . These service members come from the Air Force, Army, Marines Navy/Coast Guard, and Special Ops; they compete against each other and their counterparts from Great Britain. The events are held here on the Olympic Training Center and the United States Air Force Academy. I was able to attend some of the Paralympic Basketball and Volleyball games here on campus.

Being a tour guide on campus allowed me to give a VIP tour to some of the main donors of the Warrior Games. This VIP group of sponsors included private families, BP Executives, and Deloitte executives. It was a great time showing these Ladies and Gentlemen around the OTC. After the tour Julia who works for BP as the Director of Government and Public Affairs in the Rockies invited me out to the BP Hospitality Event they were having for the soldiers the following day! During the event I was able to speak more in depth with some of the athletes/soldiers who had competed in the Warrior Games along with several employees from BP.
The next day after the BP event I had the pleasure of being the athlete speaker at the Volunteer Awards Luncheon Briefing for 50 plus USOC volunteers and select USOC and NGB staff. The volunteers at the luncheon accounted for more than 8,750 volunteer hours. I thanked the volunteers for their tireless dedication to the USOC and its athletes. I sharef with them my story on how I became a bobsled athlete and my goal of becoming an Olympian at the 2014 Winter Olympics in

Sochi.

A few days later while I was working at the visitor center my friend Alana Nichols, 3 time Paralympian and multiple Gold-Medalist stopped by with her friend and his family. Her friend was an eight year old boy named Jason who is suffering from cancer. This little guy was full on energy and life, just bouncing off the wall. Funny thing was that after I was introduced to him his parents were trying to tell him that I did bobsled but after he shook my hand, the little guy was over it, and was running to go sit in the mock bobsled we have in the front of the visitor center. He was like met that guy already, blah blah he is an athlete that’s cool now it’s time to play on something! Lol
eBay Executives Return
If you recall about a month or so I informed you all about the great group of eBay executives who I and some of the other athletes got a chance to meet. Those initials meetings went so well that now I and other athletes are in talks with eBay about internship opportunities with the potential of leading to permanent employment. Since its Olympic year I’m looking to take advantage of this opportunity after the Games. So please pray that it all works out.

United Way commercial

Training here at the OTC in Colorado Springs various opportunities occasionally come about. This particularly week in June I and my other team mates got the chance to be in a United Way commercial that will be shown on flights as you board the plane. My team mate Curt and another Winter Olympian were the stars of the piece while I and the other bobsled were more Atmospheric Specialist or background noise! Lol It was a fun experience but I was wishing that I was a well-known celebrity so I could ask for top dollar. Hopefully in the near future when you’re sitting down for you flight you will see my silhouette in the background on the screen in front of you.
Sponsorship
As I continue working and traning to achieve my goal in Sochi I am still in need of financial sponsors. If everyone who follows my updates donates at least $50 of sponsorship money I would have enough revenue that will ensure that I’m able to afford needed trips to Park City, Lake Placid, and Calgary for training and National Team Trials! To provide me with sponsorship money please follow this link http://www.jessebeckom3.com/5.html or select the PayPal donate buttons on my web-page and blog page.
God Bless,
Jesse
